Chamal Rajapaksa

Born on 30th October 1942, Chamal Jayantha Rajapaksa is the eldest son of the late Mr. D.A. Rajapaksa, a prominent politician, independence agitator, Member of Parliament, the Deputy Speaker and the Cabinet Minister of Agriculture and Land.

The young Chamal Rajapaksa gained admission to Richmond College Galle in 1948 and successfully passed his Senior School Certificate Examination in 1962 before joining the Police Training Academy in 1963.

After passing out as a Sub Inspector of Police and after being posted in various Police Stations, Mr. Rajapaksa joined the Prime Ministerial Security Service and served under two Prime Ministers, the Hon. Dudley Senanayake and Hon. (Mrs.) Sirimavo Bandaranayake. He retired from the Police Force in 1972 and joined the civil service and served at the State Development and Construction Corporation before joining the State Trading (General) Corporation as an Assistant General Manager where he served until he entered in to full-time politics in 1985.

He married his loving wife Chandra Malini Wijewardena in 1975 and is a proud father of two sons. Mrs. Rajapaksa is a former Zonal Educational Director and the current advisor of the Hambantota Development Foundation. His elder son Shasheendra Rajapaksa is currently the Chief Minister of the Uva Province as well as the Basnayake Nilame (lay custodian) of Ruhunu Maha Kataragama Devalaya while his younger son Shameendra, a computer engineering professional, currently serves as a Board Director of SriLankan Airlines Ltd and Sri Lanka Telecom PLC.
