Speaker thanks all who made budget debate a success

Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa at the end of the budget debate in Parliament yesterday thanked all who contributed to make the budget debate a success.

The Speaker making a special announcement at the end of the debate, said the budget debate was full of heated arguments. He said valuable opinions were presented by MPs from both parties for the past 24 days.

He thanked President Mahinda Rajapaksa for presenting the Appropriation Bill in Parliament in his capacity as the Finance and Planning Minister. The Speaker extended special thanks to the Special Select Committee appointed to look into the expenditure heads of 22 ministries and secretariat for special functions (Senior Ministers) for performing a commendable task. He instructed the Heads of state institutions to give their active participation in similar endeavors, adding that he had received complaints that some of them did not attend the sittings of the Select Committees.

The Speaker said the live telecast of the Parliamentary proceedings would commence from the beginning of next year subject to editing.

He thanked Deputy Speaker Chandima Weerakkody, Deputy Chairman of Committees Chandrakumar Murugesu, Prime Minister D. M. Jayaratne, Leader of the House Nimal Siripala de Silva, Chief Government Whip Dinesh Gunawardena, Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe and Chief Opposition Whip John Amaratunga for their cooperation to conduct the debate successfully. Speaker Rajapaksa expressed his gratitude to the Parliament Secretary General, Sergeant-at-Arms and Parliament staff, security and Police personnel, officials of all ministries and state institutions and media personnel for their service and cooperation throughout the budget.

Chief Government Whip Dinesh Gunawardena speaking on behalf of the government appreciated the support of all throughout the budget, including the President, the Prime Minister and the Speaker.

On behalf of the Opposition, Chief Opposition Whip John Amaratunga thanked all who contributed to the budget debate.
